Franchise businesses have proved themselves to be a sound investment financially for many people. Whether you are new to business or have run companies before, the franchise route is becoming increasingly popular.
However, a stumbling point for some people may be the upfront franchise fee, which prohibits some promising candidates from proceeding. From now until the end of the year, Razzamataz Theatre Schools is offering an exciting opportunity for those looking to run their own part-time performing arts school.
To give more people the opportunity of joining the network, there will be no up-front franchise fee of £7,995 plus VAT to pay. All that will be required is the £4,000 initial marketing launch and £5,000 working capital as opposed to circa £20,000 that would have included the franchise fee. Candidates who choose not to pay the upfront franchise fee, will pay 20% MMF instead of 10% over three years or nine terms.
“The offer is intended to make joining our franchise network more viable for more people,” says Denise Hutton-Gosney, MD and Founder of Razzamataz. “Over the years, we have seen candidates that would make excellent theatre school owners but who just didn’t have enough upfront finance. Razzamataz is an establish franchise so we are able to offer a variety of joining opportunities that will suit a number of different people.”

Nick Furlong and Gemma Hextall are the joint Principals of Razzamataz Sutton Coldfield, who have successfully grown their school term on term. The duo took the school from approximately 40 students to more than 230 students in just two years. Both Nick and Gemma studied BA (Hons) Applied Performance at the Birmingham School of Acting, now the Birmingham Conservatoire. Nick explains: “We have always been ambitious and knew it was something we would always do and thought what better time than when we still had our fresh, hungry, youthful drive straight out of training.” Gemma says: “It’s hard work in the beginning promoting the classes and getting the word round, but there’s so much support from Head Office. Being part of an established franchise with all the power of the brand that is behind us has really propelled our growth. As well as our local marketing, we have the support of the national brand with a wonderful website and strong google and social media campaigns. This is something that we could not do as individuals and certainly not in the same time frame.”
BBC’s Dragons’ Den success story Razzamataz has grown in reputation and numbers since appearing on the popular TV show in 2007 and winning an investment from Duncan Bannatyne. This award-winning franchisor is a member of the British Franchise Association (bfa) and has recently taken home a number of its awards.
One of the stand out films of the year has to be The Greatest Showman, a musical loosely based on the life of PT Barnum and his circus. The universal themes will relate to most audiences, especially young people with a passion to perform.
It has been an overwhelming hit with many of the Razzamataz schools throughout the UK whose students can empathise with many of the characters who feel the circus is the place where they can be accepted for who they are.
Many of our students tell us that Razzamataz is the place where they can really be themselves and this in turn has led them to grow in confidence and self-belief.
Ollie Cartwright-Lomax, age 15 from Razzamataz Torbay says: “I’ve been coming to Razzamataz for ten years now and it has been a place to escape the stress of life and somewhere where you can express yourself without the worry of being judged.” His fellow student Azahara Kain age 12 adds: “Razzamataz is a fun and friendly, nice place to be. I am allowed to be myself and I have learnt a lot from the brilliant teachers.”
Across the UK, Razzamataz has this powerful message across billboards, in the hope of inspiring more youngsters to step out of their comfort zone and into a place where they can be accepted, nurtured and grow in confidence.
Students take part in singing, acting and dance classes and cover a wide curriculum so they experience both West End and Broadway musical theatre as well as the commercial genres of street dance, pop singing and acting for camera. This creates ‘triple threat performers’ which is what the industry now demands.
Whether students are taking part for fun and fitness or they want to make performing arts a career, all the way through their training, Razzamataz provides the support they need to establish connections and gain experience in this competitive industry.
Students of all ages also get a chance to work with industry professionals from the West End, Broadway and commercial genres. Razzamataz regularly host masterclasses where experienced performers come into the schools to teach sections from well-loved shows and iconic routines.
This has recently included street dance crew, Diversity, winners of Britain’s Got Talent and Kerry Ellis, star of shows such as Wicked, Oliver!, My Fair Lady, Miss Saigon and Les Miserables.
