International Musical Theatre Star visits Razzamataz Carlisle

A ‘Wicked’ experience inspires the students of Razzamataz Carlisle!

An international musical theatre star visited Razzamataz Theatre School in Carlisle on Tuesday 17th October to inspire a whole new generation of performers, after completed the international tour of the hit musical Wicked, playing the leading role of Elphaba.

Jacqueline Hughes, originally from Glasgow, led the Musical Theatre masterclass with the aspiring young performers of Razzamataz who would one day love to follow in her footsteps.

Jacqueline trained at The Guildford School of Acting, receiving First class BA(hons) and the Musical Theatre award 2007. Her theatre credits include Elphaba on the international tour of Wicked!, Katie Nanna and ‘understudy’ to Winifred Banks, Mrs Corry and Bird Woman in the UK tour of Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins. She was standby Elphaba in the UK tour of Wicked! as well as ‘swing’ and ‘understudy’ Elphaba and Madame Morrible in the London production of Wicked!

Principal of Razzamataz Carlisle Debbie Mitchell was thrilled to welcome Jacqueline to the school. “Working with industry professionals is a big part of what we do at Razzamataz.’’ She explains. ‘’This was an incredibly inspirational opportunity for our students and showed them what hard work and dedication can lead to.”

Since launching in 2000, past students of Razzamataz have gone on to have a great deal of success, working in the fields of music, dance, drama and presenting. But it is not just about those that want to work in the industry, Razzamataz is equally proud of being a theatre school that supports and nurtures each student whatever their ability.

“We are passionate about the benefits of performing arts for all children and believe it is not only for those that want to go on and make a career on the stage,” says Debbie. “Performing arts stimulates all children’s creativity while improving their confidence and we have seen children overcome extreme shyness during the years.”

Razzamataz Theatre Schools offer exceptional part-time training in dance, drama and singing together with exciting opportunities to perform, both locally and on the West End stage. Classes are held all day Saturday and on Tuesday evenings at the Performing Arts Centre at Richard Rose Central Academy, Carlisle and there are often guest workshops from a range of inspiring performers from the musical theatre and the commercial genres. Classes are for children from age 2 to 18 and allow students to experience a range of performance styles from classic West End musical theatre to funky street dance and pop singing.
